Meet the Experts

Three women. Two trips to space. Dozens of patents.
More than 80 years of combined NASA experience.
...and they want to talk to you!

Karen Nyberg

Hi! I am a mechanical engineer and retired NASA astronaut. I started my space career in 1991 and spent a total of 180 days in space in 2008 and 2013 (as a Mission Specialist on STS-124 and a Flight Engineer on Soyuz TMA-09M) .Fun fact about me: I became the 50th woman in space on my first mission in 2008.

Prior to astronaut selection, I worked as an Environmental Control Systems Engineer at the Johnson Space Center where I led several design and analysis initiatives in the areas of space vehicle and space suit thermal and environmental control.

I live in Park City, Utah with my husband, Astronaut Doug Hurley, Dinosaur-loving son, Jack, and two sweet dogs, Leo and Luke.

Let’s talk about…

  • How to become an astronaut
  • What it’s like to see Earth from outer space
  • I’m an open book! Happy to discuss anything else that makes you curious about space

Vickie Kloeris

Vickie Kloeris

My name is Vickie Kloeris and I’m a food scientist whose career has been out of this world! I worked at NASA in space food systems for 34 years. For 29 of those years, I served as the NASA manager of the Shuttle and then the International Space Station food systems. Me and my teams worked through the complex challenges of creating tasty, nutritious, long-lasting, easy-to-prepare meals that support the dietary and psychological needs of astronauts living on the space station. I’ve worked with hundreds of astronauts to develop their favorite meals and holiday specialty meals for space travel.

In 2019, I received NASA’s highest honor, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal. During my career, I was twice awarded the NASA Exceptional Service Medal and received the Johnson Space Center Director’s Commendation Award.

Let’s talk about..

  •  What astronauts eat in the International Space Station
  • A career path in food science
  • The role food plays in helping astronauts avoid getting homesick

Jenn Gustetic

I’m a technology and innovation leader for NASA, but STEM topics (and school overall) were not always my strength. It wasn’t until 8th grade that my “math brain” was activated in Algebra class. Since then, I’ve earned a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Florida, followed by a master’s in technology policy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Over my career I have had the opportunity to tackle challenges related to everything from homeland security to inclusive cities to space exploration. I’ve led at the highest levels of the Federal Government, including the White House, and completed a 2-year research fellowship with the Harvard Kennedy School in 2019. I have published work on open innovation, crowdsourcing, citizen science, research and development, future of work, and how to build communities of practice in the MIT Press, Space Policy Journal, New Space Journal, and Issues in Science and Technology. I’d love to talk to you and learn about what you’re passionate about, too!

Let’s talk about…

  • Pursuing a career in STEM and what internships to look for
  • Colonizing Mars
  • What to think about as college approaches

What our users say

The best part as her mom - she told my daughter how much she loved her energy, joyful spirit and that her teamwork and love of service to others will take her far in life.

It was kind of like a little childhood dream. I will just say, a little childhood dream to be able to talk to these people. [I've never tried] anything like this. I've never met anyone like this.

One thing that I learned is that talent and genetics get people so far, but in the end, it's the ones who have the strongest love and dedication that end up on top.

She is a positive force with an infectious enthusiasm. It brought happy tears to my daughter's eyes to have contact with such an amazing person!
